The Democratic Party (DP) president general Nobert Mao has finally resolved to face off with the incumbent Anita Among in the contest for the Ugandan parliament speakership slated in May, 2026, ending the time long speculations casting the doubt on his mega ambitious plan.
Highly placed sources close to the centers of state power have exclusively confirmed to Blazer News Times that Mao’s decision to contest for the parliamentary speakership gained approval following his internal consultations with family, friends and strategic partners, including some influential state actors.
According to sources, this decision which now sets open the stage for real body politic, will publicly be declared by his camp any time from now.
This news Website can also exclusively report from reliable sources that the Laroo Pece MP elect has already secured full backing of the main controllers of the state power including the president’s younger brother Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho popularly known as Salim Saleh, and the head of state’s son also the head of the Uganda army and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) pressure group, Gen. Kainerugaba Muhoozi.
Addressing his 2026 February, 3rd press conference from the DP headquarters- Balintuma Road in Kampala, Mao presaged ambitions for the speakership throne, saying he would only give his final verdict regarding the same, following his consultation goings on.
Mao’s contest for the parliamentary speakership is not any good news to the current speaker Among with her team who according to sources have developed panic, considering the political dynamics on the political landscape.
Sources have likened the panic to the Among’s said recent efforts geared to reaching out Gen. Saleh, reportedly lobbying him to engage his friend Mao to shelve his speakership ambitions by pulling back.
Despite the said mounting pressure, panic and growing fear, speaker Among however, recently dismissed the claims that Mao’s ambition poses serious threat on her throne, reasoning that he belongs to an opposition political party that managed to secure only 6 parliamentary seats in the January 15, 2026 elections, unlike her ruling NRM party that commands the largest number.
Mao Gain More Support from Within the Ruling Political Class.
Sources said that to affirm Gen. Muhoozi’s support to Mao, his PLU forces are the ones leading the sellout of his campaign bid among different ruling NRM parliamentary caucus members, part of the determinant win for any possible speaker.
It is said that most of the NRM party MPS elect and Independents are PLU leaning, gaining their loyalty from the late 2025 NRM party chaotic primary elections that saw many old guards lose out to the new young guards, touting the perceived ruling party’s de-facto youth league interests.
NRM CEC Endorsement of the Speaker Water Down.
At the end of the month of January, media reports had indicated that the top decision making NRM party Central Executive Committee (CEC) had endorsed that the speaker Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa be maintained on those positions, following the party precedent setting out the two consecutive terms for the speaker and the deputy, in a resolution passed during the Tuesday January 27th meeting held at the State House Entebbe.
However, sources have dismissed the said CEC resolution, arguing that it has never been concluded, and thus cannot be the party’s position.
Speaking during the Capital Radio’s Saturday 31 January, Capital Gang Talk Show, Information Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi and the former NRM women league leader Lydia Wanyoto had also ruled out the claims that CEC had already resolved on the matter.
Dr. Baryomunsi under scored the need for internal electoral hygiene, saying the process should only be initiated by the NRM party Electoral Commission, which is yet to happen.
“We should just do it in a clean way, otherwise if the first sitting after elections you’re considering it as a matter of emergency, you’re raising suspicion. While there may be that practice of giving another term, why would you want to disenfranchise all the other members who are eligible and would want to go into practice. We’re members of the party, we should have internal clean processes”, He stated.
Baryomunsi who sounded candid in his submissions, challenged the claims touting the precedent regarding the speakership election, questioning why its touts did not want allow other party members to exercise their democratic rights.
“If they are wrong, should we carry them on? We should have internal clean processes so that NRM remains a strong party. If we can’t voice out these concerns and errors, then who will voice them. The other day someone was telling me, eh, how could you make that comment, wont they drop you a Minister? I said no, come on, was I born a Minister, is everybody a Minister, is everybody an MP? Even if I am not a Minster, MP as long as I am alive, I should have the freedom to say what I feel my conscious clears. I am speaking for very many in the NRM”, Baryomunsi maintained.
