Parliament Approves Military Trials for Civilians Despite Constitutional Ruling

Blazer News Times ReporterBy Blazer News Times ReporterMay 13, 2025

On May 20, 2025, Uganda’s Parliament passed a contentious bill authorizing the military courts to try certain civilians, overturning a Supreme Court judgment that had previously barred such trials. Human rights groups argue the law undermines civil liberties and could be used to silence opposition voices ahead of elections. Supporters of the bill say it’s necessary for national security and dealing with serious offenses involving military personnel.
