The country’s human rights watchdog; Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) wants the identities of security operatives that were seen frogging the supporters of NUP president supporters Bobi Wine during his December 6 campaign in Gulu city, be disclosed.
Several people while in a procession with Bobi Wine to one of his agreed rally venues were attacked by the uniformed and uniformed Police, UPDF officers wielding long sticks and guns, leaving them badly wounded from the indiscriminate beating which has ever since sparked public condemnation.
Most of the beater’s faces were hidden and covered with masks and cloths, which left various stake holders questioning their intention. The procession had followed mutual understanding between the security forces and the leading opposition presidential candidate supporters.
His campaign entourage and vehicles had been barricaded before they could reach an understanding that saw him allowed to leave them behind as he walks to the rally venue with countable people since it was approaching the deadline for holding gatherings for that day.
It remains un clear as to why the security operatives resolved to explore frogging the peaceful citizens to the point of leaving many with sustained injuries.
Now, the UHRC chairperson Marriam Wangadya in the strong worded statement dated December 7th, expressed concern with how Bobi Wine supporters were treated by the military and police operatives, yet he was scheduled to campaign in Gulu in accordance with the Electoral Commission’s calendar.
“Media images that we have seen show use of long sticks by police and men in army uniform, and indiscriminate beating of the candidates’ supports, in contravention of the prescribed policing standards.” Part of Wangadya statement reads.
It is against that backdrop that she demanded prompt investigation into the conduct of police officers. “This is therefore to require an immediate investigation into what happened in Gulu city on 6th December 2025 and to further require an explanation of the actions of the police”.
The UHRC boss also demanded to know the steps taken by the culprits involved in such incident to justice.
The commission further demanded to know deterrent actions against any future re occurrence of the same acts in ensuring that that the citizens right of participating into meaning democratic affairs of the country is not violated.
The Electoral Commission had also condemned the act, tasking the police to investigate the personnel involved.
