The National Unity Platform (NUP) on Monday announced Florence Asio as its new flagbearer for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat to tussle it out with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate the speaker of parliament also incumbent Annet Anita Among.
This after the removal of Mercy Marion Alupo who had earlier been fronted to hold the party’s flag from the national voter’s register under unclear circumstances which the party leaders call a choreographed plot to favor speaker Among to go through un opposed.
Alupo was contending against Anita Among with FDC’s Suzan Otai and Akol Hellen Adeke whose names also went missing from the national voter’s register. However, the national Electoral Commission (EC) insist they were all not legible area voters.
The NUP Election Management Committee chairperson Harriet Chemutai said that frustration from incumbent Anita Among against their candidate Alupo informs their change of the decision.
NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Bobi Wine who was in attendance of the same meeting at the party headquarters in Kampala before he left for Bunyoro sub region to mobilize support for his 2026 presidential bid, described the events as an orchestration to silence the voices of struggling women.
Bobi Wine questioned how Among could manipulate the system by frustrating two of her contenders without accountability to go through un opposed.
Asio, who is an ardent women activist promised to advocate for improved service delivery if voted to parliament.
Despite their latest decision of fronting Asio, the NUP leaders insist that an independent investigation into controversial Alupo’s removal from the register is still necessary.
