Sustainable development advocates have expressed fear over the gaps that are still hindering the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS), with only four years left to the 2030`deadline set for all nations to domestically achieve the global agenda.

Speaking during the stake holders meeting organized by the United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) in Kampala, Alvin Mutebi, aboard member from the Royal Danish Embassy noted that while strides have been made by Uganda in advancing SDGS, there is need to close the existing gaps like an implementation, against their full success.

“Case in point is industrialization funding which remains low. The coordination mechanism with key implementors of SDGS, work in silos, ending up affecting the sustainable development agenda” Mutebi said at the sidelines of the meeting at Ntinda Ministers Village Hotel.

Mutebi added that information sharing and communication aspects had also proved to be a challenge that should urgently be addressed, as well as the low citizenry participation.

    UNAU Programs Manager Linda Asaba

UNAU ‘s programs manager Linda Asaba used the same meeting to challenge the Ugandan authority to take advantage of the July 2026 UN high level review meeting to address the said gaps.

“At the UN level, five goals are set for a review; SDG 6,7,9,11 and 17,” Asaba said.

The SDG 6 advocates for clean water and sanitation, 7- affordable and clean energies, 9- innovation, industry and infrastructure, 11-sustainable cities and communities, while 17-partnerships for the goals.

Asaba emphasized that only four (4) years were left to 2030 to witness the level of contribution and progress by the world in achieving the SDGS.

“As a country, we need to look at the accountability gaps in the goals under review”

She however, expressed optimism in the country’s annual progress report regarding SDGS, saying it would be very helpful to Uganda in ensuring closing the said gaps against sustainable development.
